Friends of the Bay continues to be at the forefront of marine conservation and preservation. Our core water quality monitoring program is in its 21st year, and once again we are participating in Save the Sound’s Unified Water Study. Outreach efforts include our Speaker Series, monthly cleanups, as well as presentations at local civic and community groups. Friends of the Bay was founded because of our advocacy work and that continues today as we serve as watchdogs of activity on the estuary.

This year, the honoree was former State Senator Carl Marcellino. He served as a state senator from 1995 to 2018. As chairman of the Oyster Bay Western Waterfront Committee, he obtained state funding to purchase and make accessible five acres of waterfront property in the Town of Oyster Bay. He also advocated for the designation of 300 acres at SUNY Old Westbury for permanent preservation as open space land. He was a founding member of the State Advisory Board of the National Environmental Policy Institute; and he was the prime sponsor of the Brownfield/Superfund Reform Law and the Pesticide Notification Law. Senator Marcellino was a vocal opponent of the plan to construct a tunnel under Long Island Sound. Before serving in the Senate, he served as Oyster Bay Town Clerk for seven years. Most recently, he was elected president-elect of the Oyster Bay Rotary, and he will be working on the upcoming Oysterfest in October 2019.
